UPDATED 16th FEB 2010
When is the ride? On Sunday 14th March 2010 Is the ride still on? Yes, the organisers have informed us that the ride IS still on. Who is organising the ride? The ride is being organised by Daniel Forder, Julia Stevenson and Elizabeth Stevens via their Facebook group – “Bike Run in support of Wootton Bassett: Sunday 14th March 2010“. The Police, MOD, Wootton Bassett authorities and staff from Afghan Heroes charity are supporting them where needed. Afghan Heroes charity is the beneficiary of money raised on the day. What time will it start? Riders will be asked to muster from 8am at Hullavington Airfield nr Buckley army barracks (A429). Full details of arrival protocols will be published later and will also be emailed to all registered riders prior to the event. Where/when will we get our wristbands? Wristbands will be purchased on entry to the muster point. How much are the wristbands Each wristband will cost £5 - One per person will be required to enter the muster point. PLEASE NOTE: These are NOT the ordinary Afghan Heroes wristbands – they are special event commemorative wristbands. Where is the muster/start point? The ride will now start within the Hullavington Airfield nr Buckley army barracks (A429). What facilities are available at the muster point? As well as the the registration desks we are hopeful that there will be toilets, food, refreshment, (yes, enough for 15K people) and shelter areas, St John ambulance first aid and Paramedics will be in attendance. What is the end point? The organisers will let us know once confirmed. We can confirm it will NOT be RAF Lyneham. Why can’t we use RAF Lyneham? Originally when the organisers approached the MOD the maximum anticipated number of bikes was 2000. As RAF Lyneham is an operational airbase, 10,000+ bikes on-site is impossible. Will the ride go through Wootton Bassett? Yes, the police and local authorities have confirmed that the ride can go through the town. Will all bikes be allowed through Wootton Bassett? Yes, the police and local authorities have confirmed that ALL bikes on the official ride will be allowed through the town. Why was the registration closed early? The organisers have been in close talks with the Police, MOD and Wootton Bassett local authorities. Following these talks a limit of 10,000 bikes was agreed as a maximum safe number for the event. Once this number of registrations was reached we were forced to close registrations. Why only 10,000 bikes? Simply put, Wootton Bassett is a small town with limited facilities in the local area to support a very large number of bikes/people. For the sake of safety, logistics, marshaling and the people of Wootton Bassett, 10,000 is the limit. I was too late to register, can I still come? Obviously we cannot prevent people from using the public highways, but the organisers would like to ask those who have not registered to please stay away. If thousands of additional bikes turn up on the day there is a distinct possibility that the event may be badly disrupted or worse, shut down. The purpose of the event is to show support to the people of Wootton Bassett and to raise funds to support our troops and their families. The best way for this to happen is for the event to run as smoothly as possible. we are very sorry if you did not manage to register and we thank you for your continued support, but please do not just turn up. There are other ways to support us, such as donations, buying a wristband or helping to set up/run an event in your local area etc. What use are the registrations now that we are not using RAF Lyneham? It is true that the main reason for registration was to allow the MOD to vet all participants. The organisers are using the original registration list to determine who will make up the 10,000 as mentioned above. All registered riders will receive an email prior to the event containing full instructions/documentation of the route, arrival / leaving times and, importantly, a proof of registration which will give them access to the muster point. When will the full details be known? There are a few minor details to iron out but once the event organisers have concluded these they will let us know and we will publish them here – Until that happens please try not to speculate. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Wootton Bassett Ride Route Info.
We have received info from the ride Marshals regarding the agreed route. Please see below: The Mothers day ride to Wootton Bassett will start on the runway of Hullavington Airfield (A429) undertaking the following route: A429 (NW to Burton Hill), B4042 (Priory Roundabout to Callows Cross), Callow Hill to White Hill Lane then A3102 through to Wootton Bassett. The ride will then go to Coped Hall (A3102) roundabout for dispersal. There will be dispersal routes clearly signed for those travelling to the North, South, East and West. To minimise local disruption and tail backs on to the M4, riders will be requested to stagger their arrival times. An interactive web site has been setup that will enable riders to not only input their ETA but also choose an off- peak time for their arrival. This will go online soon. We aim to limit our maximal arrival rate to 2000 per hour starting at 8.00am which should prevent tailbacks and stationary vehicles on the M4. We will provide alternative routes, if you require them, for those arriving from the east (via J15) and those coming from the West (J17) to decrease the ‘load’ on J17. The ride will run continuously from 11.00am until all registered riders have passed through Wootton Bassett. A slow release rate from Hullavington Airbase should mean that riders will clear the dispersal point without grid locking Wootton Bassett. All registered riders will soon receive, by email, a rider’s information pack containing all the relevant information. Credits About Us « Older posts Wootton Bassett Reserve List February 24, 2010 – 10:44 am Great News! If you missed the original registrations for the Wootton Bassett event there is still a possibility that you can attend the ride. Due to duplicate entries, drop-outs and cancelations we will be able to offer a limited number of reserve places. Please use the form on the link below to get onto the reserve list. http://www.afghanheroes.org.uk/bikerseventreserve.asp Because the number of places is not known at this time and demand is likely to be high, places will be allocated on a lottery basis. Successful riders be notified by email closer to the event. |

Got this this morning just thought id share it with you guys for those who are goin...?
Hello Rider We are sending out this email to everyone who is registered to go on the Wootton Bassett ride as there has been some confusion over the registration confirmation process. Firstly, please DO NOT just send an email back confirming your arrival time - you MUST confirm your details via the web site. Here is how to do it: 1. Follow this link http://www.afghanheroes.org.uk/bikersevent.asp (if you can't click it then copy it into your browser.) 2. In the box provided enter the email address you originally registered with - you will then see the message "An email has been sent" 3. If you see a message that says "Invalid Email" then the email you have entered is NOT in our database - if so you will need to contact us via afghanheroes@zion.co.uk to change your address. 4. Once you have successfully entered your address you will receive an email from us with the subject line "Mothers Day Bikers Event 2010 Ride Confirmation" 5. This email has a unique link in it (don't try to modify it or pass it on-it will only work for you!) click the link or copy it to your browser. 6. This link will take you to the confirmation page - YOU MUST SELECT AN ARRIVAL TIME and update your details. 7. Also on this page you can download the "Rider Information Pack" as either a PDF or Word DOC. 8. At the bottom of this page is a link to "Generate Pass" - this link will remain greyed out until you have selected your arrival time. 9. Once you arrive on the entry pass page - PRINT IT! You're done. Secondly - HERE ARE SOME DO NOTS! DO NOT email info@afghanheroes.org.uk - they cannot help you as they are not organising the registrations. Please email afghanheroes@zion.co.uk. DO NOT just send your arrival time to us via email - YOU MUST USE THE WEB SITE. If you are on the reserve list DO NOT contact us, this is for registered riders only. Here are a few other pointers. If you do have to email us please supply your name, email and bike reg. If you registered more than one bike under the same email address you will receive multiple emails - They may all look the same but the link in them is UNIQUE TO THE BIKE. They will ALL need to be confirmed. If the page said "An email has been sent" but you didn't receive an email then either 1)your spam filters are blocking our emails or 2)your ISP is blocking our emails. In which case check your spam folders and try the process again. Once again - please DO NOT email the main Afghan Heroes office - They cannot help you.
